World CP Register

Fourth World CP Register and Surveillance Congress

Course Chair: Sarah McIntyre, BAppSc(OT)Hons, MPS, PhD

Course Summary:
Cerebral Palsy (CP) Registers and surveillance systems exist to monitor rates and trends of CP in defined geographical regions, over defined time periods, around the world. They are population based, that is, reliant on a number of ascertainment sources. There are approximately 40 CP Registers currently working in their area of the world, and each register has it’s own additional aims that may include: describing motor types, severity and impairments in a population, contributing to understanding the causal pathways to CP, evaluating prevention strategies outside of the research environment, conducting epidemiological research on total populations, conducting research in samples of a population, assisting with policy development and planning services in their region. The last five years has seen an increase in registers in regions from low and middle income countries, providing population data from these countries for the first time.

The CP Register Congress is an opportunity for those working on and with CP Registers and surveillance systems to come together, share results and brainstorm barriers, concerns and new initiatives. A survey was conducted in January 2018, which included key people who work in CP Registers around the world to identify the content for this World Congress.

This World Congress will include presentations and small group discussions on:

  1. Current rates and trends, and an opportunity to discuss differences/similarities seen across the world and contributing factors for these differences
  2. Opportunity to meet those involved in well-established registers and new and emerging registers primarily from low and middle income countries
  3. Discussions regarding: Barriers to maintaining registers; new data points for registers to consider; impact of CP Registers and measuring their impact
