Meet the Members - Kristie Bjornson

Where you work: Seattle Children's Research Institute/University of Washington

Area of specialty: Physical Therapy- research on the measurement and interventions to enhance ambulatory and physical activity and participation in children and youth with physical limitations.

How long you have been there: Since 1987

Why AACPDM is important to you: The Academy for me is like having an extended large group of like-minded/interest friends who challenge me intellectually, professionally and embrace work with children and families with challenges.  This group has mentored throughout my clinical career and as I have transitioned into an academic/research career.  I could not have done it without their support.

How long have you been an AACPDM member: 22 years this year, I think.  My first AACPDM meeting was in Seattle in 1986

Favorite Book: Eat, Pray, Love

Favorite place to travel: Thus far in life I would say Italy :) 

Outside activities that you are passionate about: Downhill skiing, biking and camping

One thing people should know about you: One thing I love about what I get to do for a living is that, I get really psyched up when patients prove our 'predictions' of function wrong.

Area of specialty: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

How long you have been there: 23 years

Why AACPDM is important to you: The only strong multidisciplinary organization that concentrates on children with disabilities

How long have you been an AACPDM member: since 1977

Favorite Book: Gulliver’s Travels

Favorite place to travel: Mexico

Outside activities that you are passionate about: Choral and Liturgical Singing I sing with two groups and take lessons twice a week

One thing people should know about you: My entire deck on the house is one large series of container plantings as well as small water ponds and it is all wheelchair accessible.

Meet the Members - Uri Givon

Where you work: Safra Hospital for Children,  Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel

Area of specialty: Pediatric Orthopaedics; Motion Analysis

How long you have been there:22 years

Why AACPDM is important to you: AACPDM is the most supportive and democratic academic organization I know, with people who share my passion for neuro orthopaedics and care of children with CP.

How long have you been an AACPDM member: 10 years

Favorite place to travel: Paris

Outside activities that you are passionate about: I like walking trips in old cities.

One thing people should know about you: I love jazz music.

Meet the Members - Jennifer Miros

Where you work: St. Louis Children's Hospital

Area of specialty: Adaptive Sports for kids with Cerebral Palsy

How long you have been there: 6.5 years, since June 2003  

Why AACPDM is important to you: Great way to meet and learn from other professionals that are helping patients with cerebral palsy. 

How long have you been an AACPDM member: 1 year

Favorite Book: "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks

Favorite place to travel: Colorado to go skiing

Outside activities that you are passionate about: Skiing and all sports

One thing people should know about you: I grew up in Cleveland, OH, so I am ok with losing on the sports field.  Sports are really about getting everyone playing to their highest level! 

Meet the Members - Joseph Dutkowsky

How long have you been with your current employer: 14 years.

Area of specialty: I am a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

Why AACPDM is important to you: The AACPDM is a group of uniquely skilled and dedicated professionals who have chosen to use their time and talents to improve the lives of people with special needs, their familes, and communities. To a person, the members are kind, unselfish, highly qualified, and open enough to work with others outside their disciplines. There is no finer group of people. It is an honor to be listed with them as a member.

Favorite Book: "Witness to Hope", by George Weigel

Favorite place to travel: Acapulco, Mexico

Outside activities that you are passionate about: I am passionate about ballroom dancing.

One thing people should know about you: People should know that I am a country doctor and travel 2-3 days a week to small hospitals and community clinics to care for rural children and adults with disabilities.

 
Dr. Dutkowsky is the current Second Vice President of AACPDM.  He was elected to the position at the 2009 Annual Meeting.  He will become First Vice President in 2010, and will ascend to the position of President in 2011.  As Second Vice President of the AACPDM, Dr. Dutkowsky is responsible for appointing members and Chairs of all committees. He also presides at the in-person committee meetings during the Annual Meeting.
 

Meet the Members - Sylvia Ounpuu

How long you have been at your current institution/company: 22 years!!!

Area of specialty: Clinical Gait Analysis and Biomechanics

Why AACPDM is important to you: For the connections I make with people who care about children with disabilities from many different professions and for what I learn and how I get energized when I go to every meeting.

Favorite Book: Three Cups of Tea

Favorite place to travel: Any place there are mountains and snow

Outside activities that you are passionate about: Anything that involves snow - downhill and cross-country skiing and photography. I love cities and wilderness.

One thing people should know about you: Environmental stewardship is important to me.

Meet the Members - Andrew Morgan

Where do you work: I am a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and the Head of the Division of Child Development at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. I am also the Director of the Ray and Kathy LaHood Center for Cerebral Palsy, Medical Director of Easter Seals, and Medical Director of Pediatric Developmental Rehabilitation at the Children's Hospital of Illinois (all in Peoria).

What kind of practice: it is an academic practice seeing both inpatients and outpatients; I also teach residents and medical students, and see children within the school system.

How long: since July 1980 - 29 years.

Area of specialty: developmental pediatrics (neurodevelopmental disabilities)

Why is AACPDM important: It's the only organization where I can interact with specialists in all disciplines about children with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities and where I can learn about all the new research

Favorite Book: To Kill a Mockingbird

Favorite place to travel: the Greek island of Santorini

Outside activities: very active in community theater as a performer, choreographer, and director; I also play guitar and hand percussion

One thing people should know about me: I am, at heart, a romantic who believes in the goodness of others and the absolute power of love.

Most powerful memory: watching the caisson at JFK's funeral from the top of a knoll when I was 14.

Any other interesting facts: I saw The Beatles at their first US concert in Washington DC.
